Why are there so many chickens running loose in Kauai?

Hawaii was wonderful. Jeremy and I escaped from the cold to celebrate our 8th anniversary without the kids. We had a lot of fun. But, mostly it was just nice to be able to relax.
My amazing sister Laura flew in from Washington DC to take on three kids and a dog for the week (with a little help from friends and grandparents at both ends of the week, which means we never got to see her: so sad). They all survived, and we got a special surprise- Ethan could sound our words when we got home! Thanks, Laura.

Here are a few highlights from the trip:

Fern Grotto

This little hula dancer boy was so fun to watch.

At the Polynesian Cultural Center, the Samoan presentation featured a climb to the top of a coconut tree. I don't understand why they need this skill though, since they told us that the ripe coconuts fall to the ground. I guess they do it to collect the leaves.
Poi balls: much more fun than eating poi!
The view from our room. We left the windows open and listened to the waves as we fell asleep.

Oh, lovely pictures!

I was sorry we missed seeing you. :-(

(And I still have no clue why Ethan could suddenly sound out words.)

There is someplace not exactly better, but different than Hawaii that Allison wants to go. I have already convinced her I hate New York, only to surprise her with a trip to New York for Valentines Day this year. There is another place she still believes I deplore... that is where we are going for our 10th.
